Honouring Motherhood in All Its Forms

Honouring Motherhood in All Its Forms

A Message from Our Founder, Diane;

When I think of Mother’s Day, I don’t just think of the traditional definition of a mother. I think of my own family, friends, and colleagues—the mothers, the stepmothers, the single mothers, those trying to conceive, those who have lost babies, the new mothers, those overwhelmed with the role of keeping everything going, those about to give birth, those about to embark on married life and starting a family, and the women for whom motherhood just never happened. I think of mothers guiding their children into adulthood, men who are both mum and dad, and those grieving for the mums who are no longer here. In my own circle, I know people in every one of these groups, and each of their experiences is deeply personal, yet universally understood.

For me, it has been 35 years since my own mother passed away, and I’ve not had the fortune of having my own children. This past New Year’s, on the anniversary of my mum’s passing, I reflected on how long it had been without her. The person I was speaking to responded with something that struck me deeply—they told me I was Mother GAIA.

As the founder of GAIA, everything we create is inspired by the earth—by Mother Nature herself. Our brand embodies everything a mother should be: nurturing, grounding, responsible, liberating, and exceptional. But motherhood isn’t defined by giving birth, nor by having a mother present in your life, or even by being female. Motherhood is about creation—creating moments, experiences, and opportunities. It’s about caring and loving, allowing others to blossom and grow, and embracing our own growth. It’s about respecting the natural cycles of life, and working with Mother Nature rather than against her.

Right now, we are emerging from our wintering season, a time for slowing down, for sleeping more as the nights stretched longer and the world felt quieter. For some, winter has brought hardship, and we have leaned into the lessons of Mother Nature, knowing that spring always follows. And now, spring is here—a season of renewal, growth, and the promise of brighter days. With this change in seasons comes a renewed vitality, a sense of hope, and the energy to bloom once again.

We all have the power to be Mother GAIA—to be creators, carers, and nourishers, to love deeply, and to show compassion. This Mother’s Day, let’s celebrate all these qualities, recognizing that motherhood exists in many forms, in many people, and in many ways. Let’s be inclusive in our celebration, honouring everyone who embodies the spirit of nurturing and love.

Happy Mother’s Day to all who mother, in every sense of the word.

With love,
Diane Nettleton
