About 8 to 10 years before the menopause begins, women may notice signs of perimenopause, which have similar side effects, common ones include:
- Hot flushes and night sweats
- Mood changes, including depression and anxiety
- Trouble sleeping
- Reduced sex drive
- Headaches
- Weight gain
- Stiffness, aches and pains
Here are our top wellness tips for women going – or about to go – through the menopause:
Eat well
Nourishing your body with nutritious food will help you stay happy and healthy while going through your menopause. Don’t leap on to a drastic diet plan, as this can be overwhelming and not the most sustainable option but make small changes and switches to ensure you’re eating a balanced and calcium-rich diet.
Make switches to healthier options, try switching sugary cereal bars for a handful of nuts, or some carrot sticks and hummus. Leafy greens, such as kale and spinach are high in calcium too or switch out sugary deserts for natural yoghurt and fruit.
Try gentle exercise
Whether you join a yoga class, head to the pool for a swim, or go out a few times a week for a walk, light exercise will help your mind and body feel better during the menopause.
