Our Awakening Shampoo and Awakening Conditioner are always our go to natural hair care products for thoroughly cleansed and conditioned hair, but we also recommend adding in a regular intense treatment for the hair and scalp, using pure natural oils that don’t contain any chemicals that you’ll likely already find at home, and here are just a few of them.
Coconut oil naturally comes from coconuts and is one of the most versatile oils, also being great for the skin. It is rich in fatty acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals that are essential for hair health.
Coconut oil is suitable for all hair types, particularly dry, damaged, or dull hair and works well to repair brittle hair and split ends and is recommended to promote hair growth and a healthy scalp. Coconut oil improves the look of hair by deeply nourishing and helping it retain moisture, adding a healthy shine, all while providing an exotic coconut scent.
Being solid at room temperature, coconut oil requires gently heating or warming in the palms to melt for easier application. Leave it on for up to 1-hour, or overnight for an intense treatment. For an oilier hair, apply to the hair and avoid the roots and for a dry scalp always apply generously to the scalp too.
Almond oil is derived from the kernels inside almonds. Not only great for cooking, sweet almond oil is a wonder for your hair. Containing vitamin E, fatty acids, proteins, and antioxidants, along with magnesium, it helps to reduce hair breakage and therefore increase hair growth.
Sweet almond oil is best for dry and damaged hair, dandruff-prone hair and those with slow-growing hair or hair loss issues due to its moisturising, sealing and protective qualities. Using it regularly helps to grow longer and stronger hair.
Warm one tablespoon of oil and apply it into the scalp. This is another oil that can leave on overnight for a more intense treatment and wash out the next morning. Sweet almond oil can also be applied to the ends of the hair once washed to treat particularly brittle and split ends by rubbing a few drops into your palms and smoothing it onto towel-dried hair, also helping to de-tangle and leave a glowing shine.
Olive oil is derived from pressing olives and is most often used in the kitchen. It has protective and moisturising properties which coat the hair, being most suitable for dry, damaged, frizzy and dandruff prone hair and scalp. When used regularly, olive oil can replace the need to use conditioner and other hair-smoothing products, as it is rich in natural antioxidants.
Olive oil protects against heat damage, can provide a well-conditioned shine, giving a truly healthy appearance to the hair.
Treat your hair and scalp at least once per week, using two tablespoons of olive oil on either dry or damp hair and leave it on for 30-minutes. You will likely find that after thoroughly shampooing, there is no need to condition separately. To help fight dandruff, add a few tablespoons of lemon juice and water, and rub into the scalp, leaving on for just 20-minutes.
Grapeseed oil is an extract of cold-pressed grape seeds not just used in cooking and beneficial for heart health. It contains emollients, antioxidants and nutrients that are essential to the growth of healthy hair and skin cells. Grapeseed oil is exceptional in its ability to treat brittle and weak hair and loss of hair. It is also an effective dandruff and dermatitis fighter and has been known to help regrow hair.
Grapeseed oil is lightweight compared to other oils, so it is great for more frequent use working to moisturise and condition, dry and dull hair making it strong and repairing split ends. It can also help to fight dandruff and dermatitis due to its anti-inflammatory properties, containing vitamin E for strength and shine and blocks the hormone that can cause hair loss.
Coat your hair with a few tablespoons of grapeseed oil and leave it on for 10 minutes, and rinse with cold water for a shiny finish. For drier scalp conditions, rub the oil directly into the scalp and leave in as an overnight treatment.
